MANAGEMENT / DECISION WORKSHEET
Five Questions Before Deferring Work
A discussion template developed from the management essay, with an illustrative entry. It is not a specific project record or a validated procedure.
Deferring work leaves a responsibility that keeps changing. Use this worksheet to make the trade-off explicit and give the next discussion a basis.
Who bears the cost of delay?
Which commitments or dependencies change? When will the cost grow? Separate known impacts from unknowns; “low priority” is not an explanation.
What resources and preparation must remain?
Identify minimum maintenance, verification, documentation and coordination. Define what stops. Keeping some work active does not preserve the original delivery commitment.
Who decides, who tracks, and who needs to know?
The decision-maker owns the trade-off; a named owner tracks deferred work. They may be different people. Tracking responsibility does not grant authority to reallocate resources. List whose commitments need renegotiation.
What change would make us reconsider?
Define observable triggers: a blocked dependency, unacceptable risk, or the prioritized investigation failing to reduce a critical unknown. A trigger starts a new discussion; it does not automatically restart work.
When do we review, and with what evidence?
Set a date and convener even if no trigger occurs. Review both what the investment gained and what the delay cost. Update the decision and delivery expectations.
Your decision record
Edit the template, then copy or print it. It stays on this page; nothing is sent or saved automatically. Reloading, leaving or changing language loses your edits. The editor can scroll vertically; the complete record is copied or printed.
Deferral decision record Work / decision date: Current priority and basis: 1. Cost of delay Affected commitments / dependencies / people: Known impacts / unknowns and confirmation owners: 2. Minimum resources Minimum maintenance / verification / effort: Paused scope / revised delivery expectations: 3. Decision and tracking Decision-maker / owner tracking deferred work: People whose commitments need renegotiation: 4. Reconsideration triggers Observable signals / thresholds: Who tracks and raises the discussion, and when: 5. Review Date / convener: Evidence of progress and the accumulated cost of delay: After review: decision / reason / commitments / next review
Mark missing information as “to confirm” and name an owner. Unknowns are not commitments. Longer records may print across multiple pages.
Limits of use
This discussion template develops the ideas in the management essay. It does not claim proven results in a specific project. It supports alignment, while domain evidence and team agreement remain necessary.
